Project Background and Security Requirements

Challenges of Oil & Gas Perimeter Protection

This oil and gas services project required a perimeter fencing system with excellent structural strength, corrosion resistance, anti-intrusion performance, anti-climb protection, and explosion-proof safety.

Security chain link fence, also known as diamond mesh fence, is widely adopted for oil and gas projects because of its flexible structure, high impact resistance, low cost, and easy maintenance. It acts as a physical isolation barrier to prevent unauthorized personnel, vehicles, and wild animals from entering restricted zones, while also protecting production equipment, oil tanks, and pipelines.

For a coastal refinery in Southeast Asia, the fence system had to perform reliably in a harsh environment with sea salt spray, humidity, and industrial chemical vapor. Based on these requirements, we designed a high security chain link anti-climb fencing system combined with an electronic perimeter alarm solution to create a stronger and more intelligent perimeter defense.

Oil & Gas Grade Chain Link Fence Specifications

  • ·   Edge type:

    • Knuckle edge (safe, no sharp points)

    • Barbed edge (enhanced anti-climb)

2.2 Surface Treatment (Core for Anti-Corrosion)

Oil projects are often located in desert, coastal, saline-alkali, or humid industrial environments. Anti-rust treatment is mandatory.

  • ·   Hot-dip galvanized: Zinc coating ≥ 70 μm, offering excellent resistance to salt, alkali, and industrial fumes; service life of 15–20 years.

  • ·   Galvanized + PVC coated: Inner galvanized layer + outer PVC layer (1.0–1.2 mm thickness), available in green, black, and grey. Anti-UV, anti-corrosion, and anti-chemical erosion; service life of over 20 years.

  • ·   Galfan coated: Zinc-aluminum alloy coating, suitable for harsh desert and offshore oil facilities.

2.3 Supporting Posts & Accessories

  • ·   Posts: Round steel post / square steel post, hot-dip galvanized; diameter/section: 48 mm / 60 mm / 80 mm

  • ·   Spacing: 2.0 m ~ 2.5 m

  • ·   Reinforcement: Top & bottom tension wire, middle horizontal brace to prevent mesh sagging

  • ·   Anti-climb accessories: Concertina razor wire, barbed wire, anti-climb brackets (installed on top for high-security zones)

  • ·   Gates: Swing gate, sliding gate (vehicle access) + pedestrian gate, matched with access control & lock sets

  • ·   Extra fittings: Anti-climb bolts, tension bands, post caps, warning plates

Benefits of Chain Link Fence for Oil & Gas Facilities

Strong Impact Resistance

Flexible diamond mesh absorbs impact and is not easy to deform when hit by equipment or vehicles.

Superior Corrosion Resistance

Professional anti-rust coating adapts to desert, coastal, saline, and chemical industrial environments.

Good Ventilation & Fire Safety

The full mesh structure allows air circulation and helps avoid gas accumulation, supporting petrochemical fire prevention requirements.

High Visibility

Clear visibility is beneficial for patrol inspection and CCTV monitoring around tanks and production areas.

Easy Installation & Repair

Lightweight material is suitable for large-area layouts and complex terrain; damaged parts can be replaced separately.

Cost-Effective

Compared with 358 mesh and palisade fence, chain link fence offers lower material and construction cost, making it ideal for long-distance perimeter projects.

Safety Design

Smooth knuckle edges help prevent scratches and injuries to staff and equipment.

Enhanced Security Solutions for High-Risk Oil & Gas Zones

For tank farms, refineries, and core production areas, the standard chain link fence can be upgraded into a multi-defense security system:

  • ·   Basic fence + top razor wire / barbed wire for anti-climb and anti-trespass

  • ·   Add vibration sensors / infrared alarm along the fence, linked with CCTV

  • ·   Install anti-vehicle bollards at gateways to block illegal vehicles

  • ·   Use heavier gauge wire and reinforced posts for anti-cut and anti-damage protection

This integrated perimeter security solution creates multiple layers of defense against intrusion, climbing, cutting, and unauthorized access.

Project Outcome

This high security chain link anti-climb fencing system successfully improved the refinery’s perimeter protection level, reduced unauthorized access by 90%, and fully met local petrochemical safety regulations.

The final solution delivered a balanced combination of structural strength, corrosion resistance, visibility, ventilation, and cost efficiency, making it a reliable perimeter security choice for oil and gas services projects in coastal and industrial environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is chain link fence widely used in oil and gas projects?

Chain link fence offers a combination of high impact resistance, cost efficiency, visibility, ventilation, and easy maintenance. It is particularly suitable for large oil fields, refineries, tank farms, and pipeline facilities requiring long-distance perimeter protection.

What is the best chain link fence specification for refinery security?

For refinery and restricted-area security, a 50×50 mm mesh opening combined with a 3.5–4.0 mm wire diameter and hot-dip galvanized coating is commonly recommended. Additional razor wire and electronic intrusion detection systems can further enhance security.

Is galvanized chain link fence suitable for coastal oil facilities?

Yes. Hot-dip galvanized and Galfan-coated chain link fences provide excellent resistance to sea salt spray, humidity, and industrial chemical exposure, making them ideal for coastal refineries and offshore oil installations.

Can chain link fencing be integrated with electronic security systems?

Yes. Chain link fencing can be integrated with vibration sensors, infrared intrusion alarms, CCTV surveillance systems, access control systems, and perimeter monitoring platforms to create a comprehensive security solution.

How long does a chain link fence last in an oil and gas environment?

A hot-dip galvanized chain link fence typically lasts 15–20 years, while galvanized and PVC-coated systems can exceed 20 years under proper installation and maintenance conditions.

What additional security features can be added to a chain link fence?

Common upgrades include razor wire, barbed wire, anti-climb brackets, reinforced posts, vibration sensors, infrared alarms, anti-vehicle bollards, access control systems, and CCTV monitoring equipment.
